day twenty-six

cactus pear

According to the trusty field guide to produce cactus pears come in various colors corresponding to the colors of the plants blossoms. The fruit has a stiff, spine covered rind and is generally eaten fresh and raw. The flavor of a ripe cactus fruit depends on the variety but may resemble strawberry, watermelon, honey dew, fig, or banana.

The guide suggested passing the fruit through an open flame in order to remove the spines. Let me just say that I think that the grocery store should have a CAUTION sign by these bad boys. I totally just picked one up, not even thinking until about 30 secs later when my hand began to itch and burn. It subsided by the time I left the grocery store, but next time I'll use a bag...or something.

So the first bite I had was rough and bitter, apparently I bit into the one little piece of skin that we accidentally left on. The second bite much better, I a little like watermelon.
